Also könnte man Sääski sogar als Realist bezeichnen.

"I don´t want to only describe things we already know."

The visual artist Juha Sääski repeatedly takes up new challenges. His paintings are easy to read as socio-critical comments and he does so himself. At the same time he always returns to the beginnings of his artistic career and to the desire to create beauty: "I am an incurable aesthetician. The need for aesthetics is present in all of us. When I watch my works - their design, composition, rhytms or the interaction of colors - I see them always as abstractions. But then again I come from the modernist tradition."

However, Sääski is often classified as a postmodern artist which he himself does not oppose. A certain irony, a key element of Postmodernism, can also be found in many of Sääski´s paintings. But whereas the irony in Postmodernism is frequently targeted at other works or elements from earlier artistic periods, the irony and parody of Sääski is directed towards everyday life and a reality we all share. I do not think I am wrong if I add one more description of Sääski to the ones mentioned above: Sääski is a metamodern artist. As frequently inherent to metamodern artists, he freely and uncalculatingly combines modern and postmodern elements and has a permanent  interest in the improvement of our jointly created reality. Even though he uses humoristic tools, Sääski´s works are free of platitudes or cheap jokes: "I don´t want to only describe things we already know."

Sääski deliberately chooses naive and stereotypical motives and he does so in an even methodical way. He uses well-known imagery: "I am using stereotypes because, for many people, there is a certain amount of truth in the phenomena that stereotypes are born from." Sääski´s method to unexpectedly clash these simple visual worlds in a playful and creative manner is giving room for new perspectives. Often, the line lies between the tragical and the comical: "In combining tragic-comical and contradicting elements I strive to describe the paradoxes of human life and to reveal the true nature of things and phenomena."

So Sääski might even be called a clever realist.

JUHA SÄÄSKI

Schändlich / Shameful

Gemälde / Paintings   27.8. - 24.9. 2016

Galerie / Projektraum TOOLBOX, Koloniestrasse 120, Berlin-Wedding

In Juha Sääski´s paintings shame is put in an appearance through social phenomenons and gender role models. The concept of shame is changing continuously; the things that used to be shameful twenty years ago, are not necessarily shameful today. Among other factors reality television has changed the culture, hiding shame has become making it public.

In Sääski´s paintings shameful means for instance how we have let the structures of our societies change under command of economy at expense of human value, dreams and future hope. A limited amount of humour in Sääski´s paintings is acting as a symbol of hope.

Juha Sääski is showing distanced metaphors of different forms of shame and its social connections through surreal and absurd associations. But nevertheless they are not too far removed from the view of everyday life.

The clichees and naive elements used by Sääski are included in the means of comedy, which show the nature of things and phenomenas in a new, but not a joking viewpoint. Sääski´s aim in juxtaposing the tragicomic, contrary elements is to express the paradox of human existence universally applicable.

Juha Sääski is a finnish visual artist, who has arranged five solo exhibitions in Germany: Nuremberg, Ulm and Berlin. This exhibition is his third in Berlin. Sääski has participated eight group exhibitions in Germany, for instance in Munich, Berlin, Viernheim, Mannheim and in Ludwig-Museum Koblenz.

Juha Sääski: Life Behind the screen,  2.8. - 30.8. 2014

Galerie TOOLBOX, Berlin-Mitte,  Novalisstrasse 7

In his paintings Juha Sääski is showing viewpoints to our mediarelationship, mediadependency and confusion that they produce. He sees that the main media is increasing alienation and due to that it is weakening our sense of reality, which makes the abuse of political and economical power possible. These circumstances have lead to crisis in democracy.

In his works Juha Sääski is often using surrealistic and absurd metaphors, which actually are not very far from the reality shown by the main media. He compares simplified naiveties, cliches, optimism, humour and aesthetics to serious and sad subject matters. By combining these tragicomic, conflicting elements he is expressing the paradoxal nature of human life and giving a re-arranged form to content matters, which are familiar to most but still maybe obscure.

How do we generally understand the messages of the media ?  According to the song of John Fogerty:

"I know it´s true, oh so true, ´cause I saw it on TV".

 Charlie Chaplin:

"Life is tragic at close up, but comedy from distance".

Kaikissa ihmisissä on esteettisyyden kaipuu. Katselen omia töitäni - niiden sommittelua, rytmiä, värien vuorovaikutusta jne. - aina myös abstraktioina. Olenhan kasvanut modernistiseen perinteeseen. "
